One in 100 people will suffer a seizure at one point in their life. Many assume they have epilepsy, a disorder of the central nervous system where the brain's normal pattern of neuron activity is disrupted. Common signs of epilepsy include loss of consciousness and seizures, although these can also be symptoms of other medical conditions.

November is Epilepsy Awareness Month and physicians at Mayo Clinic are sharing information about this disorder which, while rarely curable, can be controlled. Epilepsy, also called seizure disorder, affects almost 3 million people in the United States. When a person has two or more unprovoked seizures, they are considered to have epilepsy. Approximately 200,000 new cases of seizure disorders and epilepsy are diagnosed each year.
Dr. William Tatum, D.O., Mayos new epileptologist, shares information about epilepsy, how to gain an accurate diagnosis and all available treatments.
