Although this is a superbly written work, and that I am forever in Robert Grave's debt for getting me interested in Roman History in the first place - please, everyone, bear in mind that this is a work of historical FICTION. No responsible historian would suggest for a minute that Livia was anything other than a noble, diligent and well respected Roman woman. As Allan Massie says ... the character of Livia presented here is a compound of venomous and unhistorical slanders.
