In 2006 and 2008 typhoons Durian and Fengshen struck the Philippines destroying 250.000 houses and affecting 6.500.000 people. The Philippine Red Cross, with support of IFRC, launched a reconstruction and recovery programme to help people build their own homes while introducing more durable shelter solutions. The assistance included the provision of construction materials, tools, a basic house plan and a manual to build safely. About 14000 beneficiary families have adopted these improved construction techniques.
