PlusPolice Raid Maryland Mayor's Home and Kill DogsPolice Raid Maryland Mayor's Home and Kill DogsThe Associated PressThe mayor of Berywn Heights in Prince George's County wants a federal probe into a raid at his home. Authorities stormed Cheye Calvo's home after intercepting a marijuana package addressed to his wife. (August 7)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] Officers from a Maryland police department raid the home of a local mayor as part of a multi-million dollar drug bust.Sounds like a major political scandal, right?Problem is the suburban Washington D-C mayor says he and his family members are innocent victims. Now, Mayor Cheye Calvo is calling for a federal investigation.((Calvo SOT: A shadow was cast over our good names. We were harmed by the very people who took an oath to protect us.))Calvo says before he went inside of his Berwyn Heights home one day last week...he stopped on the porch to pick up a package addressed to his wife. That package was filled with 32 pounds of marijuana...that *didn't* belong to the mayor or his wife..and it was being tracked by authorities.((Calvo SOT: Trinity was an innocent and random victim of ID theft whose names and address were stolen and used on drug pkgs.)) Shortly after the mayor closed the door...a SWAT team stormed his home without knocking...handcuffed him and his mother in law...and shot and killed the family's 2 dogs.Calvo's wife and several other residents in the small town say they're devastated by what happened((Trinity/Mayor's wife SOT: A little girl came to our house the next day//She said to me if the police shot your dogs and did this to you. How can I trust them.))2 people have been arrested in connection with the drug delivery scheme and more than 3 and a half million dollars worth of marijuana has been seized.Still, Prince George's County police department officials are defending their raid on the Calvo home.(( Mark Spencer/Inspector General for PGC Police Dept. SOT: It's unfortunate innocent civilians do get caught up in activities like this. That's why drug dealers use the innocent to screen their activities. This is just an unfortunate occurrence.))Spencer says the Calvos are no longer a part of the larger drug investigation, but his department will continue to look into how the raid was carried out.
