Gandalf was Kris Thorisson's 1996 Ph.D. thesis titled "Communicative Humanoids: A Computational Model of Psycho-Social Dialogue Skills", developed in the Advanced Human Interface Group (1992-5) and the Gesture and Narrative Language Group (1995-6) at the M.I.T. Media Lab.

Several people lent a hand in the programming, including Joshua Beers (body tracking), Hannes H. Vilhjalmsson (Gandalf's hand), Erin Panttaja (pitch tracking), and Steven Levis, Roland Paul, Nimrod War- shawsky & Calvin Yuen (Gandalf's face). Gandalf was developed in the Ymir cognitive architecture framework, which later evolved into the Constructionist Design Methodology (Thorisson et al. 2004) which has been used to develop dialogue skills for the Honda ASIMO robot (Ng-Thow-Hing et al. 2008, 2009). -------
