from the demo/collection "this is you and me"

"bedside biography"

wake up with someone
you don't know anything about
you try to make sense of what you've done
without thinking aloud
without making a sound
too late, her eyes begin to flutter
she starts to wake, quick
have a story, don't trip, don't stutter
don't mind the mess you've made
it ain't my fault, it's all 50/50 in this life
and it's not a full night without a compromise
another drink and you're not fit to drive
and by the way you're screaming behind your eyes,
i'll be your one good lie, but your excuse for the night

that's where you'd say...

hours pass, she hasn't even tried
to leave your side
you've got her life story and you're keeping stride
you're singing a song and she sighs, "keep going"
while she starts to breathe softer
we move to the room
now's not the time to think, don't blink,
don't say a word
just give her what she's asking for
and so you look up from the part in her hair
to where it falls and it leaves her shoulders bare
her touch and your fake embrace
hides the worried look on your face
a cigarette and a hint of a smile
your hands travel down to her waist
you're trying not to move too fast
to get it just right,
to be her one good lie
and her excuse for the night

that's where you'll say...

inside out
i'm shot down
and though i swore that i would rise above
i kept on looking down
i'm coming clean
yeah, i'm all the fuss
and all the things that i've just seen
don't compare to what i leave behind
(so you made your way,
i made my mistakes,
can we try again?
can we start over?
i'd do anything)

and in a photograph i'll meet you
you'll take a shot to see through me
and even if it's poetry
it's just words and rhyme
and i can't see the sun
there's no one left to blame
and though everything has changed
i found myself, over and over
lying to me again...

that's where i'd say
i'll be okay
