The first H1N1 flu outbreak in North Korea was reported on Wednesday. The countrys state-run news agency says that nine people have been infected in Sinuiju and Pyongyang.
No deaths have been reported.
A day before the North's announcement, South Korean President Lee Myung-bak said at a cabinet meeting in Seoul that his country was ready to help the impoverished neighbor to fight the spread of the H1N1 flu.
[Chun Hae-sung, Spokesman, South Korean Unification Ministry]:
"We are preparing to offer unconditional help to North Korea from a humanitarian standpoint as soon as possible."
Tension runs high between the two Koreas. North and South Korea are still technically at war since the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce without a peace treaty.
