Roger Barrett's mental state is well-documented. The ukulele-bashing incident, the 1975 picture with the shaven eyebrows and brushing his teeth repeatedly, the socially-odd behavior in later interviews, etc.

However, if you want to make this a "loyalty" concern, you might want mail Nick Mason about that issue. Roger cried when he saw him in bad shape (1975). Don't forget that David Gilmour made sure that the song royalties came to Syd. They didn't pick him up for his current state of mind.

I've always interpreted the song as a a cry for help to the band. A self-acknowledgment of his "insanity," but also a criticism of the band for throwing him away so easily.

At least that's what I get out of the song...
