That's so broad, it's absurd.

Having both a knife and a gun is usually a good idea. Outcome depends on who manages to land the disabling blow/shot. Shooting isn't as easy as some people think and neither weapon offer a guaranteed crippling wound. Is all about shot/stab placement. Might sound silly, but the human body is a very resilient piece of evolutionary work.

Seriously, ask any (properly trained) policemen and they will all tell you that if someone that already has a knife in his hands and is inside an ~6m large radius away from you and they decide to charge you at full sprint and you do not already have your gun drawn AND already pointed at them AND the safety is already off, the knife wielding person has the upper hand in the vast majority of cases.

So yeah, I would NOT fuck with anyone that has an 18" knife! ;)
