Bell Patterns Project - Drum Camp 2011 - Moroccan Krakeb / Qarqeba* - Bobo Bouboul, Gnawa Morocco
Sharing the love of bells!
I asked a number of people at this year's Drum Camp (drumcamp.co.uk) to contribute "Bell Patterns" as a simple project. That's all I asked for them to share. Sometimes I gave them a stick and a small cowbell with some nice tones to it .
Great musician Bobo Bouboul was giving workshops teaching Moroccan percussion and dance of the Gnawa people from Morocco, North Africa. We'd jammed together the night before so I didn't mind asking him for his contribution.
He plays here the krakeb* - iron "castanets" (for the purposes of this video I'll also call them "bells"...) He gives a demonstration of a few patterns and rhythms. I love his explanation of the history of the instrument in Gnawa culture linking it directly to slave history. Also great is his response to his partner's comment that they'd make a good ashtray!
Apologies for the sound - it was windy and the camera mic responded badly.
Many thanks go to Bobo for his generosity in sharing this with me / us. Gary
