For the first time in history, more people are searching the Internet for health information than asking doctors. Digital health consumers, known as e-patients, are now empowered, equipped, engaged, educated and connected to others electronically. E-Patient Connections 2009 is the one conference you need to attend to make sense of the radical changes taking place in health marketing. Spend two days in October--get breakthrough results for a year.

  • The obvious drawback of online health info is quality of information. However, the more common (and more insidious one) is lack of perspective. It's easy to google a symptom or mention it to a friend, hear the related symptom, and diagnose yourself with the wrong disease. A major part of a doctor's training is learning how to overcome this thought pattern (a popular anecdote is the med student who thinks he has the disease he just learned about.) Many illnesses share the same basic symptoms.

  • Great Presentation! We hope to follow up with a Panel at the next South x Southwest conference on DIY Healthcare Reform NOW! One of the unintended consequences of the year long national debate on HCR was that it motivated many to solve the problem with our own solutions. Now after helping millions with our creations a number are being mashed up to create the Health Online Patient Experience that helps doctors and patients improve care and reduce costs. Vote for us at the SXSW site # 6439

  • I began connecting with information 30 years ago with medical texts and never looked back. I am my own health care provider.

Most of the main online sites in this video are backed by pharmaceutical companies that hire moderators. People are still being conned but in a different way.

Go beyond mainstream sites and get the real info, it's there.

  • GrannieLynn1, I couldn't agree more. I like to say patients should rely on 3 info sources: their doctor, evidence-based medical info, and other patients who have the same condition. Thanks for commenting.

  • I have been a nurse for almost 30 years now and have seen major changes in the healthcare field in this time. I feel that the comment about Dr's no longer being the experts is somewhat incorrect. I feel that the Dr's are still very much experts but they are no longer the only expert in the room. It is extremely frustrating to find pt's that refuse to learn anything about their diseases or disease process. I am glad that there is accurate patient information available. But....browser beware!!

  • Doctors are no longer the experts. There is too much information for any one person to know. Proper medical care can only be achieved by individuals seeking out information and understanding their own conditions.
