I'm from Wales and even I know that Australia is not and as far as I'm aware never has been a majority Roman Catholic country like Spain, Brazil and Italy etc. It's a fairly mixed county.

Australia is a very very multicultural nation, probably one of the most mixed in the world. That means we have all kinds of religions here.

The only thing that's changed since Prisoner was made is the flow of immigrants. Back then we had a lot of Greek & Italian immigrants (the Italians could be where you get the Catholic idea from) now we have a lot of Asian immigrants arriving, bringing Buddism, Hindu, Moslim etc. Many white aussies are just athiests.

I thought that Australia was a Catholic country, and as I result I was very surprised to see gay issues being tackled in the series, especially in the early 80s.
