This is the last step prior to sanding and buffing your skimboard. This is the process i take to apply the final gloss coat. The gloss coat comes after the Flood coat which comes after the initial glass layup. You perform this task for each side. The final gloss coat is the most critical. Make sure your board is clean, make sure your brush is free of loose hairs , and work in a clean environment to avoid dust and other items settling on your board while the resin is setting up. It's is best to work in the proper temperature as prescribed by your resin instructions. Always use proper ventilation and a safety breathing mask.

  • Hey, I was just wondering what's the difference between the flood coat and the gloss coat and what it does? ...and what you use for each coat? I'm really interested in making my own board and your videos are helping loads, Thanks.

  • @samcookie369 flood coat is the coat of resin that you laydown with a brush after the intial glass layup is dry. The Flood coat fills in all the rough areas of the fiberglass weave. Some people stop at the flood coat and go and ride their boards. The gloss coat comes after the flood coat has hardened. This is to give the boards its final smooth glossy finish. Put this on a little thinner and hotter. I have a way in which I warm up the resin so it flows out thin. but you must work fast

  • i have two questions

    1. what did you use for the flood coat

    2. what is the 1ml drop for each ounce

  • @macleanja

What part do you want to know about the flood coat. Please be more specific. for the resin i use the same epoxy as the same for the glass.

Also - The drops are F-Additive for Resin Research. This helps with the final buffing and fish eyes in the resin. do a google search for Resin Research F-Additive.

  • i am about to post another video about that.

    thanks for watching

  • hey , how do you do the flood coat ? and did you put another sheet of fiberglass cloth upon doing this part ? cause i'm trying to figure out if i'm gonna buy one or make one . but i really wanna make one , it feels different if you did it your own .

  • @itwasnotjulian the flood coat is over the glass and resin after it has dried. you do the flood coat to fill in the weave of the glass. after the initial 2 layers of glass you don' t need anymore glass, just epoxy.

i sell a hand written guide for $25 bucks. let me know if you are interested.

  • We were also wondering about sanding and buffing, because the tape left a ridge on the edges of the board.
