  • The correct order for an abdominal examination is always.. Inspect, Auscultate, Percussion, Palpation.

  • i've been taught inspect, auscultate, percuss, palpate. You know why? When you percuss or palpate first, you might hear sounds that are not actually there, but you have just created them with your percussion! so Dr Steven C is correct

  • i don't believe you mentioned how long a person must listen for bowel sounds to conclude that they are absent

  • so if i were a male and i had upset stomache basically symptoms of gastrointeritous, would the doctor examine my groin.could a doctor or med student please advise, if thats the case would that be sometimes maybe or compulsary.

  • informative.. nice video...

The thing is, what you said is the new guide of how to examine the abdomen.

What they did is the old guide, they didn't do anything wrong, but it could've been better.

You are form the USA, so there it is taught that auscultation comes 2nd.

  • when you are palpating for abdominal aortic aneurysm are you feeling for pulsation? Or what are you feeling for?

  • @Liliess

Thats how we teach it at the Med School I work for, for that exact reason. A patient who might not have had bowel sounds, might suddenly have some caused by the shifting of stool from the palpation. Also, we stress assessing for any potential bruit of the aorta, iliacs, or renals, before palpation, as the palpation may cause an aneurysm, or dislodge a clot.

  • about the order... i think its a regional thing

  • @fairycake4me there may be some kind of hernia or something that comes from the abdominal cavity

  • I percussed on the jawbone instead of the heart last week.
