Great moment in the film-noir classic "The Maltese Falcon" from 1941.
Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart) snubs Joel Cairo (Peter Lorre) and gives a short lecture on how to be a man ...

"When you're slapped, you'll take it and like it."

  • With a modern quick draw holster the elegantly tailored Cairo would have put finish to that meddling private dick and then gone to dinner with the lady.

  • Today, most men just won't stand for a woman slapping a man. Today Bogie would give her a belt in the mouth and a good telling off and THEN take care of the slimebag bloke (probably a 'Hugo' any way) in the time honoured fashion.

  • It's not a lecture on how to be a man, but rather, a lecture on why you'll always be a lesser man than Humphrey Bogart. :3

  • @gjm1953 Yeah, I agree. I was in tears from laughing so hard the first time I saw this part.

  • most ganster line ever in a movie, dont know why i thought of this just now.

  • homogays

  • Humphrey Bogart probably weighed 140 pounds. If he slapped anyone in real life, he'd get his ass kicked.

  • Lorre played an excellent fag!
