The Mando reveiw is for those who asked for it. Song starts @ 2:30 if you want to skip the review...

$299 with a case and a strap - I don't think you can find a much better deal for the price. Especially for no laminates.

I don't know how to play mando yet - just had it for a couple of days and can just fake my way around.

This song pops up from time to time, this is close to how I remember it as a kid. It's one of my favorites, supposedly written long after Jesse's death but before Ford died - Whenever I play it, I wonder what Bob thought of it.

I couldn't think of a better first mando song.

Someday I'll learn to play in another key.

  • Hey grumpy,I just bought a mandolin,I heard from a friend of friend of a friend.....you can tune a mandolin like a ukulele and chord it the same as a uke,Do you know about this??

  • @rustler540 I've never heard of that approach. I suppose it's possible, with the right guage strings (you'll have to fake it).

I do the opposite - I tune one of my ukes like a mandolin, but again, you need the right strings.

  • @GrumpyCoyoteTunes Hey Grumpy, thanks for the reply, any idea on what type of strings?

  • @rustler540 Not sure. You could try tuning the mando down with those strings.... As long as you are not tuning up, it won't hurt to see if it works (Low g CEA). Again, don't tune up - you'll break your mando.

    Might just work.

  • WHAAA!?!

Ok - seriously - I had a dream that I played the mandolin last night...woke up this morning wondering about the instrument...then you post THIS!? THANK YOU!!!

Oh Grumpy - can you always answer my dreams!? ;)

  • Spooooky. Mando's are cool - much harder to get chord forms on, but scales are nice and easy. The strings are like playing an egg-slicer, but I don't mind that to much.

  • @GrumpyCoyoteTunes hehe...Thanks! I tried tuneing it before your reply and I broke a string.....oh well,I think I almost have it though,very close.Thanks ;o)

  • fantastic!!

  • Very very nice video!! I LOVE your singing and its hard to sing along with an f-hole mando -- no sustain and all. That's also a nice little axe -- years ago I had an MM f-model and it did real fine for me. A 'hog mando is an interesting idea -- and it does sound brighter than ya might think for that wood -- but its a fine sound. Those tuners are Pings from China -- not Grovers -- but they are well-made and should work out great for you. Fine job -- I wish I could sing like you.

  • Just spectacular, Grumpy! You're an excellent faker.

    Congrats on the new instrument.

  • Wow! I never would have thought you'd only been playing for a couple of days. You play it really well already. That sounded great. Thanks for the review too. The mandolin is an instrument I really like the sound of, but know nothing about, so your review was really interesting.

  • That's a helluva mandolin. Nice clean and crisp sound that obviously holds up in a studio. How does it sound outdoors?
