I was recently invited to a student Banquet held by Sayuki, Japan's first foreigner geisha. This banquet is not the average banquet, it is a special banquet that was organized on a budget to introduce students to the world of the Geisha.
The geisha banquet consists of a dinner with traditional Japanese food, wine and sake. The geisha wore elaborate kimonos with traditional hair and make-up, which took many hours to prepare.
That night, the geisha played the shamisen, a traditional Japanese three-stringed instrument and the taiko, a traditional Japanese drum. The geisha also performed a dance during the dinner ceremony with the sensu (folding fan).
The banquet was held in Tokyo's Asakusa hanamachi (geisha district) in Japan. Other geishas in attendance include Yuko, a senior geisha and a taikomochi (a male geisha).

That was pretty awesome. I'd like to know the name of the song playing in the background.

Sayuki still works as a geisha together with geisha from around Tokyo and including some from Asakusa too. You can contact her on sayuki.net.
She's a beginner on the shamisen and singing. But she played the flute for many years before she changed to Japanese flute so that is her main art.
There are plenty of Japanese American opera singers. Sayuki grew up in Japan. Why shouldn't she participate in the culture she grew up in just like Japanese Americans participate in American society?
