When Pope John Paul II visited Cuba and Mexico his visit created lots of criticism, fueled mostly by Spanish-language media in L.A. Creating a hostile environment in which people felt free to blame the Pope for all the social injustices still prevalent in Latin America.
It was the Catholic Church once again under attack, I felt unfairly. So, I took it upon myself to educate the public, by taking on the critics on live TV if necessary. The journalist from "La Opinion" cancelled his appearance at the last minute.
It only took 10 years for Communist Cuba to turn around a 180 degrees on how they dealt with Catholics, and their religion, on the Caribbean island.
This change, without a doubt, the blossoming of the seed planted Pope John Paul II's much maligned trip to Castro's Cuba. Proving 'optimism' was based on faith not naivete.
