WENT TO # 20 IN 1966. LYRICS:
Once I was a king
I thought always a king
'Cause I just captured someone's heart
But may I explain, I treated her mean
And then my kingdom fell apart

I found I couldn't sleep at night
And when I found her gone from sight
Found out I loved her
Became a joker
The joker went wild and he couldn't smile
'Cause he had lost everything
The joker went wild and he couldn't smile
He felt no longer like a king

Some friendly advice
Treat her heart nice or she won't
Stay for very long if at all
If you think you're a king
And you know everything
Just remember, the joker or you'll fall from her arms

You'll find you cannot sleep at night
And when you find she's gone from sight
You'll find you loved her
Became a joker
(Repeat Chorus)

  • @James0022ify - you are very welcome Jim!

  • I love this song and have the original 45rpm. I also have his only #1 hit.... Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini from 1960, boy that took a lot of energy, and Gypsy Woman from 1970. Thanks for bringing back the memories.

  • i remember when this song came out. always think of the words to an old Joplin sonf Come on and break it, you've got a piece of my heart

  • best part of Youtube is that for a few minutes, I can be young again, listening to the songs of my youth.

  • i was 10yrs old when this song came out.when we go out on school field trips we would sing this song on the bus!

  • My second favorite Brian Hyland song. I like "Run, Run, Look and See" the best.
