Before asking why is it funny please read this. The car is a Funny-Car. In drag racing there are different classes of cars one of which is Funny-Car so named because in the early days the cars were made from stock looking cars but the rear wheels were moved forward which made them look "funny". The term "funny car" was just away of describing the class these cars compeated in, it has since become the official name for the class.

  • Awesome video. Is this from one of the "And They Walked Away" series?

  • @300Z31 Its from "decade of thrills" an old Diamond P production.

  • A: No one died

B: The drivers of each car were interviewed afterwards, a bit hard to do if they were burned alive.

C: Try reading the rest of the comments as there is an explanation on why the cars are called Funny-cars.

  • Is there a chance you can post Don Prudhomme's fire? It's mentioned right at the end of the clip.

  • If I remember correctly this was at Orange County International Raceway here in So Cal. After Billy Meyers and Denshams fire.. Don Prudomme had a fire the next day. Everyone started calling that weekend event the "Bonfire Nationals".

  • @300Z31 Wow I thought I was the only one who remembered the "And they walked away" series which was also a Diamond P production. I think this footage is on both.

  • @FuelCoupe Ah very cool, very cool. Thanks for the upload! Awesome.

  • No matter how many times I look at this, I am surprised there is any of the 280Z body left at all... horrendous fire, whoa...

  • Stupid ass! boid09

  • those were known as "match bash" cars,as those had their front- and rear axle centerlines moved way up forward as related to their factory counterparts on which they were based upon; most of those early "floppers" ran some slightly upgraded engines -roller cams, forged intenals,roots-style blowers,etc-,and had SUV-like ride heights, but their overall action factor was unquestionably beyond redline,so talk about drag-racing history

  • Now that's a Hotwheels car
