This past Saturday a co-worker invited me to the 13th Annual United San Antonio Pow Wow (the traditions and culture of American Indians are celebrated in this yearly gathering. Gourd dances, a Native American Church Service, and Grand Entries are all part of this event which promotes understanding between non-Indians and Native American and cultural exchanges between tribes) and I feel so very fortunate to have been there.

My friend is of Mescalero Apache descent and as such she was there to perform during this spectacular gathering. (She is a "shawl dancer" and can be seen doing so throughout the video - we're pictured together at the end).

There is a Northern & Southern drum and the singers & drummers sit in circles in the middle wherein the dancers encircle them but not until the space has been blessed by chants & prayers by the Tribal elders. (Talk about a heartwarming ceremony...I cried then and my eyes are watering again as I type this.)

While there I had the honor & pleasure of meeting members of many different tribes (Hawaii & Canada were represented) and I assure you that the thrill of seeing & hearing them dance, sing & drum messages of hope & unity will live in my heart forever. (Sadly, my camera lost audio on most of the footage so you're hearing one my favorite songs "The Counterclockwise Circle Dance" from the Sacred Spirits CD.

Needless to say, my life has been forever changed by this experience and my outlook enhanced because of it. "You already possess everything necessary to become great." ~ Crow Indian Proverb

  • Shelly this footage is outstanding! The colours and dancing so beautiful...it takes your breath away. I hope you were able to watch the opening ceremonies at the Olympics here and see some of our native people taking part ...we could learn so much listening to and watching this wonderful group of people.
