Interactive 3D Ant Pheromones Simulation by ForgeFX

This video demonstrates the interactive 3D ant farm simulator developed by ForgeFX for Pearson Prentice Hall. With full control over the real-time 3D simulation, students can interact with the virtual environment and the artificially intelligent ants to see how they will react to changes in their surroundings. The simulation allows the user to speed up, slow down, or even stop time, so that they can more closely study how ants use pheromones to communicate. The simulation provides a visualization of the pheromone tunnels created by ants so that students are able to see something that is actually invisible in the real world. The scent tunnel that can lead an ant to food is made of pheromones. A pheromone is a chemical released by one animal that affects the behavior of another animal of the same species.

ForgeFX developed this interactive 3D simulation to help students understand how ants communicate using pheromones. Like other insects, ants perceive smells with their long, thin, and mobile antennae. The antennae provide information about the direction and intensity of scents, allowing the pheromone trails to be followed by ants.
