Launching a single-seat sailplane from the side of the Long Mynd. Interesting Fact #1: The Midland Gliding Club is one of a handful of clubs in Europe still regularly practicing this method of launching. Interesting Fact #2: The MGC bungee runner briefing held the record for most repetitions of the phrase 'Don't let go!' until the release of the film 'Cliffhanger'.

  • Is that a bungee launch, or a line on a pulley into the wind?

  • It's bungee - a Y-shaped arrangement of elasticated rope that stores enough energy to get the aircraft moving. The massive headwind plays a part in the aircraft becoming airborne, admittedly :)

  • I took my first (and only!) flights in a K8 at Long Mynd. However no bungee launches that day. Good to see how it's done.

Great site and had fun sheep dodging on the final!
