  • A definite gem of a video, and a very exciting race. Was it Miguel Rivera who rode Little Current here? He didn't ride him in the Derby, but then won Preakness and Belmont with him. I just saw Miguel en Puerto Rico three weeks ago and finally age and girth have caught up with him in his late 60s. A great guy, anyway, very accessible and friendly. And a great jockey in his time, too!

  • @stanleyjensen1950

Thank you for the kind words!

  • I was at Saratoga for this thrilling Travers. I was 10 years old and the two worst days I ever remember at the track -- weatherwise -- were the 2003 Belmont when Funny Cide was going for the Triple Crown and this Travers in 1974. Unbelievably horrendous day. My family desperately wanted Chris Evert and she ran a gallant race in defeat, and did most of the work in the race on the lead.

  • Holding Pattern is one of my favorites of all time. I was a Jockey Agent in Chicago, and watched him set the track record for 6f after being off a looooong time. Never saw that he ran again. He was a better horse than Little Current..I remember when he was on the inside of Little Current at Monmoth...he just wouldn't let Little Current get by...and he was so little you could hardly see him! Great little horse...like to know what happend to him...

  • The '74 Monmouth Invitational would be a great companion vid for this one.

  • a wonderful race to view from historic Saratoga .

  • WOW. I graduated from high school in 1974, and in August, I drove my 1966 Dodge Dart from Long Island to Saratoga, to bet Holding Pattern in this Travers. He paid $27.40, and I was amazed at the price, considering he had just beaten Little Current at Monmouth two weeks earlier. I never thought I'd get to see this race again. Thanks for posting it.

  • Never seen that! Hey Little Current almost got it. Thanks for the footage cf1970, you never disappoint. Cheers!

  • Great video on one of the most under rated, guttiest horses of his time! Holding Pattern

He beat Little Current in the Haskell Monmouth Invitation as well. He even beat ONION who just defeated Secretariat!

  • holding pattern beat little current in the Monmouth Invitational as well. He also beat ONION who beat Secretariat.. Little Current was voted 3 year old of the year even though he never beat Holding Pattern. Little Current was owned by John Galbreath who owned the Pitts Pirates. Holding Pattern was owned by John Gerbas, a working stiff who sends you his best for your great comments in regards to my greatest horse, Holding Pattern ! Had no clue this was on YOUTUBE
