Professor Gad Horowitz develops and instructs his Spirit of Democratic Citizenship (University of Toronto) seminar as to how General Semantic techniques can be utilized to politicize hegemonic understandings of the world and to develop counter-hegemonic thinking and practice. Gad adapts the principles of General Semantics to democracy; in so doing he radicalizes the rules of engagement producing what he terms Radical General Semanitcs.

In his 2009 first lecture in Radical General Semantics Horowitz discusses the 'semantic blocks' produced by actual existing democracies (AED), introduces the work of Alfred Korzybski and the General Semantics movement, talks about Korzybski's famous statement 'the map is not the territory,' establishes the dysfunction of the 'is' of identity and the importance of non-identity, null A, to radical democracy.

Three key concepts of General Semantics are introduced: WIGO (what is going on), unsane, and e prime.
