Henry V - In 1989 Kenneth Branagh directed his first adaptation of a Shakesperian play, it was Henry the V, that won an Oscar for Best Costume Design and had nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Director.
Here's the prologue, played by thespian Sir Derek Jacobi.

  • He is unequaled ... there are many ways to read the words, but I have never seen it done like this -- Sir Derek understands and projects from the depths of his soul, and this entire scene builds and builds. I wish I could put it into words, but alas, my name is not WIlliam Shakespeare

  • You did quite a good work anyway :)

  • this is fantastic!

  • ^^ I agree

  • He is sexy in a beard!

  • This is probably my favourite SDJ's look ever...beard, hair, black coat and scarf...*drools*

  • I would pay to watch Derek Jacobi read the phone book. Perhaps the finest actor living today. Certainly in the running.

  • Have you seen Jacobi's Hamlet? Kick ass.

  • Hope I look like that when i get older !

  • When it comes to Shakespeare, Derek Jacobi is the man. Plain and simple.

  • Symphony for the spire

  • Jacobi nails this (of course he does!) but I've never liked his delivery of "our PLAY!!!!!!" at the end,... just erks me,....

  • He sounds like the Twilight Zone guy.

  • @pmo1983 I'm sorry, I should've explained more. The thing is, for a play the prologue is okay as it talks about the lack of facilities and space. But this was an actual movie made for God's sake. You don't have excuses like not being able to fit horses and 1000 plus men in the stage, because you can really do it in a movie. This is what I meant with my comment.

  • Is there an HD version of this anywhere?

  • I think Jacobi does an excellent job at speaking the lines so that a modern audience might understand them. They are great words, though condensed from the original, and words I can only imagine a seasoned playwright/actor could fashion.
