Mickey Newbury : After All These Years

Mick and Susie celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary in October of 1979. Though traditional and modern gifts include tin, aluminum and leather, he gave her a pretty song. "It became a family joke," explained Susan. "If there was an anniversary or birthday coming up, the kids would go shopping and Mickey would go writing... He knew I was happier with a new song than anything from a store."

Mickey explained the strategy during a Bay Area concert. "Being the cheapskate that I am... see it's cheaper... I mean I can just slide back in a little dark corner... and come out... and I'm a hero for a year!" His gift to Susie this year was titled, "I Still Love You After All These Years."
