There is a ghost prowling the waters off Queensland Australia, a silent phantom sailing on a doomed voyage she will never complete, a silent reminder that even those who are sworn to save lives are not immune to the ruthless nature of war. The name of that ghost is AHS Centaur

May 12 1943: The hospital ship AHS Centaur, departed Queensland Australia on her second voyage as a Hosptial Ship bound for the New Guiniea Front carrying 332 Passengers and Crew, including 18 Doctors and 12 Nurses from the Royal Austrailian Army's Nursing Service and 192 members of the Royal Austrialian Army's 23rd Infantry's 2/12th Field Ambulance. It would be a voyage she would never complete

At 4:10 AM May 14th 1943, the Japanese Submarine I-177, under the command of Lt. Commander Hajime Nakagawa, slammed a single torpedo into Centaur's port side fuel oil tank setting the hospital ship ablaze, bearly three minutes after the attack the Centaur plunged into the Abyss taking with all but 64 including 1 doctor, 1 nurse and 14 members of the 2/12th Field Ambulance, of her 332 passengers and crew

  • Never transport ammunition together with the wounded !

  • @MegaGojira3000

the soldiers were field medics and Ambulance drivers , and there is a rumor the medics thought to be combat troops since the only way to tell a Medic from a Infantryman in the Austrailian army was by a badge on their collar, and it was leagal for them to carry weapons, it wasn't that uncommon in the Pacific to see Medics and Ambulance drivers carrying weapons and not wearing the Red Cross since medics and ambulences were prime targets for Japanese snipers and air attacks

  • 3 MINUTES!?
