I think the fisherman was trying teach the boy a lesson that you need patience with things and I think the fish symbolizes the girl

I like this video because it's one of those ones that you can interpret in your own way. I think that the boy was hurting 'cause he didn't have a father, he was hurt about his father leaving/dying. Maybe his experience with his dad made him feel anyone he cared about would abandon him, so he didn't want to let people see his vulnerability. But then the fisherman's kindness somehow restored his faith in other people. Of course, that's just my take on it. It's different for everyone.
