Everyone does covers of "Baby One More Time", so here's a cover of Britney Spears' "Why Should I Be Sad" with my beginner's guitar playing and some handy GarageBand effects. It's incredible that Britney Spears doesn't share songwriting credits for this song; the storytelling of the lyrics is so unvarnished and personal, you'd think she wrote it. But, as some review I remember reading said, anyone can tell Britney's story at this point.
Some more thoughts: Why Should I Be Sad is my favorite Britney Spears song ever. The weirdness of the chord progression from major to minor, the alternately flat affect of her falsetto and the more pained affect of her lower register all work with the sad, but obstinately emotionally-repressed lyrics -- giving the impression of a woman who is fed up with her man and wants to breakdown, but will do everything she can to hold it together and "black out" the pain. Nothing's more heart-wrenching than denial.
I really love this and your appreciation of the song! I couldn't agree with you more with your statements of the song. Love this!
