Although Berlioz had so structured his magnum opus so that it fell into two independent parts, he had nevertheless always wished that it should be regarded as one complete work. He based his text on Virgil and his dramaturgical construction owes much to Shakespeare's influence. In its range and sweep Les Troyens can only be compared to Wagner's works, but despite the massive choral scenes, the plot itself is focused upon no more than three characters. In the first part the prophetess Cassandra warns the Trojans of a renewed attack by the Greeks, but no attention is paid to her words. In the second part Aeneas, who had succeeded in escaping from Troy, allies himself with Dido, queen of Carthage, and becomes her lover. The gods, however, have other plans for him. At the end of the opera Dido is also granted prophetic powers and foretells the defeat of Carthage and the founding of Rome.
