Nobody's Sweetheart Eddie Condon 1929
Edie Condon made jazz history by recording 4 tunes in December 1927. Here in 1929 he recorded one of the tunes again but also made his singing debut. In those days every trumpet player was inspired by Bix Beiderbecke. In the 1927 recordings called McKenzie and Condon's Chicagoans Eddie used Jimmy McPartland on trumpet and in this recording you'll see another Bix fan called Red Nichols. Also notice that in the last few bars you can hear PeeWee Russell on clarinet

  • It came actually from a larger film, about 10 minutes or so on Red Nichols and shot as a 1929 vitaphone film. I just lifted the Eddie Condon part out of there.

    Take care

  • This is great! Thank you so much for posting.

  • @SwingMan1937

Bass drum was used in many recording sessions before 1927. Art Layfield may be heard merrily thumping away on the bass drum on most of the acoustic Isham Jones sessions. Bass drum was present on 'most all of the electric Whiteman sides for the Victor, may be heard on many early Columbia electric records, and even can be noticed on some Edison sides.

  • it sounded like he said "i'm nobody's retard"

  • The original McKenzie-Condon Chicagoans session of December, 1927 also featured 2 firsts:

1.) The first ever recording session to use a full drum kit w/bass drum.

2.) 18 year old Gene Krupa's very first recording session.

Also, I can't tell from the film, but Frank Teschmacher was indeed the clarinet man on the 1927 recordings.

  • painted lips, painted eyes . . . wearing a bird of paradise . . . great lyric!!!!

  • It is so rare to hear Condon singing other than back home in Indiana. This is great and thanks for the posting.
