On July 14, 2009 Ruth Hellevang presented at the Pemberton Tea & Tales program. Ruth's passion is bird-watching and she has been bird-watching in the area since she moved to Pemberton with her husband Elmer in the 1950's. Approximately 20 years ago, Ruth began a life list and diligently records all the birds she sees at her farm at the end of the Upper Pemberton Valley road and submits the list, once a month, to the University of Victoria. Ruth has sparked the bird-watching passion in many people over the years and there is currently a group of "birders" that meet on a regular basis to compare notes and to participate in the annual Christmas count.
