HAN:
Yesterday, as Beijing's Olympic torch reached the top of Mount Everest, Tibetans around the world held candlelight vigils. They are mourning the more than 200 Tibetans said to have been killed during recent crackdowns on protests.
Tenzin Dorjee, Deputy Director of Students for a Free Tibet, spoke to us at the vigil here in New York. He says the torch run up Mt. Everest is a propaganda exercise meant to underscore the Chinese regime's claims on Tibet.
[Tenzin Dorjee, Students for a Free Tibet]:
"They're calling the summit the 'final assault' and it's actually a very apt and appropriate term to describe what they're doing to Tibetan culture, Tibetan people, and Tibetan religion. It's nothing but an assault."
Tibetans have been calling on the International Olympic Committee to cancel the Tibet leg of the torch relay, saying this could cause further repression in a nation already in crisis.
