The Tdap vaccine provides immunization against Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis
Tetanus is an Infection that causes a severe, painful tightening of muscles, including of the 'lockjaw', which can limit swallowing and breathing. You could get Tetanus through an open wound.
Diptheria is a A throat infection that can lead to breathing problems, paralysis, heart failure and death.
Pertussis or Whooping cough is a contagious disease that causes violent coughing fits that make it hard to breathe. Several cases of Whopping cough have been reported recently. It spreads easily when someone with the disease coughs or sneezes. The symptoms can last for months. Whooping cough is particularly dangerous for young babies.
The vaccination given during childhood may have lost its efficacy. A booster shot is needed to protect you and the people around you.
For school year 2011-2012, all students entering 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grades will need proof of an adolescent whooping cough booster immunization before entry into school in the fall.
For school year 2012-2013, and all future school years, all students entering, advancing or transferring into 7th grade will need proof of a Tdap immunization.
All public and private schools are affected by the law, including Charter schools, Community schools, Juvenile court schools, and other alternative school settings
So, What will schools accept as proof of immunization?
Any immunization record such as the 'yellow card', that includes the Student's name, Date of birth, Vaccine name or abbreviation,, Date vaccine administered Name of the clinic, office, or doctor.
