  • so is it basically the chord that makes the difference, to make the mode sound unique?

  • For me yes. The chord you play under those scales determines the mode sound.

  • I play trombone, but this still helps me a ton as far as improv goes. I was always able to play by ear, but knowing what I'm playing helps alot and now, I can play better on odd keys.

  • You're a genius! Go all the way with this simplified approach. You'll land at the same doorstep any other method will teach you.

I've played with some great trombonists namely Glenn Ferris and Bruce Fowler back in the 70s when I was based out of Los Angeles. The trombone can bend notes like crazy and is great fun for a guitarist to try and match.

    Best of luck, John

  • so when your playing the c mjr scale over d mnr chord. that makes the c mjr scale dorian mode?

holy shit i am so confused. good thing i'm good without this knowledge. but it's exactly this knowledge i need to become an even better musician. damn you theory!

  • YES When you're playing the C major scale over a D minor chord that makes the scale turn into the D Dorian minor scale.
