The immortal poet LI Bai (李白,701-762) served briefly in the imperial court of Emperor Tang Xuanzong (8 September 685-3 May 762) and was ordered to write some poems praising the beauty of the emperor's favorite consort Yang Guifei (1 June, 719-15 July 756).
Offended by the poet's personality as well as some of his poems, Yang Guifei asked the emperor to politely remove LI Bai from the imperial court after treating him an extravagant farewell banquet.
Bound for exile in the year 744, the poet LI Bai wrote down the poem "Rugged Roads" (《行路難》) to grieve the difficulties of court politics and the vicissitudes of life, while still remaining optimistic about his future political struggles.
The pitch goes up and down in the melody, which simulates the ruggedness of the roads in front of the poet.
