They say that history tends to repeat itself. Sometimes things are eerily similar. Other times, the differences make one wonder if it's anywhere related to the incident prior. This... is a story like that.

...

"You really don't need to do that," Protoman commented for what was probably the fifth time.

"Do not worry yourself, Proto-sama," 2k-tan responded, bouncing the bags of groceries in each hand to get a better grip. "I am more than capable to carry the nourishment."

"That's... not what I meant..."

2k turned to look at the fellow robot, who just shook his head.

"Nevermind that. We should get these food back to the house," he explained. "Though, Luigi IS the only one of us that actually needs to eat..."

Protoman's musings interrupted by a solid thump against his side. He turned in time to see the little girl that had run into him fall down onto the sidewalk. Her eyes met his for a brief moment, then they welled up with tears and she began to cry.

"Hey, hey now," Protoman murmured softly, kneeling down next to the brown-haired girl. "It's okay, it's okay. Are you hurt anywhere?"

She shook her head no, but continued to cry, pawing at one eye with a mittened hand. 2k moved to the little girl's side, dropping to one knee and placing a bag of groceries on the ground. With a hand freed, she lightly patted the girl on the head.

"Do not cry," she stated soothingly. "What is your name?"

"A... *snif* Ayu..."

"I am 2k-tan, and this is Proto-sama," the female robot explained, motioning to her self and then to the scarf-wearing automaton. "What is the matter, Ayu-chan?"

The girl sniffled again, looking hesitantly between the two.

"It's alright, Ayu. You don't have to tell us if you don't want to."

She glanced between them again, contemplating, when something splattered on the top of her head. She looked up, and closed an eye as another raindrop hit her in the cheek. 2k and Protoman turned their gazes skyward as well. The clouds overhead had darkened quickly, and the rain was starting to come down.

"We should seek shelter," 2k-tan stated, scooping up the second bag of groceries and glancing about. "There is a museum at the edge of the street."

"Right," Protoman agreed, standing. "You should hurry home, Ayu."

The two robots waved goodbye and turned to leave, but Protoman was jerked slightly as something tugged on his scarf. He looked over his shoulder to find the little girl clinging to the yellow cloth. She sniffled and rubbed her eyes again. Protoman slumped his shoulders and sighed.

"Alright, come on, Ayu. We'll wait out the rain together."

...

They had just gotten inside when the rain started to fall harder. Hanging over the entryway was a banner advertising the new Chinese exhibit that would be on display starting the following day. The place was eerily quiet.

"... Where is everyone?"

"The museum is closed," 2k-tan stated simply. "The door was locked, I let us in."

"Let us..." Protoman began, before sighing. "We're not supposed to break into a building to get out of the rain, 2k."

"We should not worry about that now."

"Yes, but we'll have to pay for it la-..."

2k shook her head before continuing. "Ayu is missing."

Protoman blinked at that, and turned to find that the little girl had indeed disappeared, leaving wet boot-prints leading deeper into the dark museum.

...

Ayu looked about with a child's curiosity at where the Chinese exhibit was being set up. She padded along, looking at everything. Outside the massive glass window behind her, the gap in the rainclouds gave a clear view of the sky beyond. The sun had just set when she had run into the two robots, and now the moon hung clear in the sky. She slipped under the cordon and moved closer to get a better look at the Chinese relics.

In the darkness, something moved.
