because its very common notation thats used in atleast 10 books i've seen :)

to any Americans out there i would appreciate it if you could tell me if this is the type of chemistry you learn in high school or from a basic university course.

because if this is the stuff you learn in high school than america's education system is substantially better than Australia's.

Well, you can learn this topic in high school, usually in an IB or AP course. It's kinda first year university stuff, really.

This is a great introduction to understanding the basis of physics.

It took me a while to understand it myself and it's only if you understand the logic behind the processes and how thermodynamics governs it all that you start understanding the more complex physical concepts.
