yeah heli says something about the crystal if i remember well and in hl1 you can hear some scientist saying something about it too i think,but gman was definitly the one who gave the crystal to bm,and since an the end of hl1 gman thanks you for taking control of xen maybe it was his goal to take it over from the begining(since he provided the crystal)

Well, In hl, he can be seen arguing with a scientist and stuff, so maybe not work there, but he definetly did do stuff there, maybe he helped get the crystal they used that caused the resonance cascade, and probably knew it would cause it, cause h told Eli Vance to prepare for unforseen consequences before it happened
