I believe these verses speak of a sign of the Day of Judgement, not of a historical miracle. Nonetheless, God supported prophet Muhammad with miracles, such as the Night Journey, blinding the people of Quraysh who wanted to assassinate him, and angels that supported Muslims at the battle of Badr.
