BBC Two's overpopulation programme "Horizon: 2009-2010: How Many People Can Live on Planet Earth?" in HD.

Synopsis:

"In a Horizon special, naturalist Sir David Attenborough investigates whether the world is heading for a population crisis.

In his lengthy career, Sir David has watched the human population more than double from 2.5 billion in 1950 to nearly seven billion. He reflects on the profound effects of this rapid growth, both on humans and the environment.

While much of the projected growth in human population is likely to come from the developing world, it is the lifestyle enjoyed by many in the West that has the most impact on the planet. Some experts claim that in the UK consumers use as much as two and a half times their fair share of Earth's resources.

Sir David examines whether it is the duty of individuals to commit not only to smaller families, but to change the way they live for the sake of humanity and planet Earth."

  • If you want 1 hectare properties for everyone and no need to build houses near flood-susceptible plains, volcanoes etc. and for there to be enough arable land to feed everyone without the need of exploiting the environment, yes.

The way we are living now has over 1 billion people in poverty, dying without enough food and water, many houses built near dangerous areas which constantly fall victim to natural disasters, and an ever more polluted and destroyed environment.

  • This shows that we must teraform mars first we use the plants to make a atmosphere then we add water but well aritficialy be making it then wee ad the species in that order than move people exe...

  • @Sara3346 This is a good idea and I would love it if we could already teraform Mars! But by the time we do, if we didn't already address the issue of overpopulation on Earth in the meantime, we would end up with 2 overpopulated planets. :( We need to be educated about birth control (have 3 or less kids), because otherwise everything is in vain.

  • Everyone who agrees with David Attenborourgh should dislike video's that say overpopulation is a myth.

  • Okay so they are worried about too many people living on planet Earth, then they are worried that there won't be enough water to supply the people on Earth... *Scratches head* isn't that good then! People need to die right?! So the problem solves itself. Just enjoy the present.

  • this made up my mind about kids. never having any

  • @aliciafortune human selfishness ladies and gentlemen.

  • This is stupid. You can't control reproduction. It's a human right. if you fucking try to tell me how many kids I can have or if I can have any I'll tell you to go fuck yourself. Idiots. You wanna stop overpopulations take a running leap. that will at least solve some of the problem.

  • its funny how before this I was just watching hostage criminals get killed and people(including me) are complaining about the brutality of police. Now knowing that overpopulation is a problem I change my mind.

  • I never thought I'd say this because it didn't seem possible, but I think the sophistication of youtube commenters has actually declined. Idiocracy I say.

  • This is why having gay people around and accepting them can be a good thing

  • @MrGypsyLovelyFace Treat the symptoms and hope the problem goes away on its own? Overpopulation is a symptom, not the problem itself. The problem itself is that we for some reason pick and choose to follow leaders who think mostly with their brain stems. The problem is untapped human potential hidden largely in our brains but even down to the cellular and nano levels of our cells. They have even claimed the human has 3 brains (brain, brain stem, and gut) Ever hear "I have a gut feeling" Thats it

  • @isabella8885 There are only 2 real solutions to this, I think you'll agree that they are the only solutions and that they're both ridiculous haha. 1: Mass genocide, kill off large populations of humans to keep numbers down. 2: Populate another planet to provide living space for the people, but that's just ridiculous. So that's it, we're fucked :)
