Jim discusses the important elements of stride that cannot be found on the written page. What makes stride(a jazz style), different from ragtime, pop-swing, honky tonk, barrelhouse, novelty piano etc.? Stride with all of its energy and drive is a style of piano that is dependent on the subtleties that are rarely discussed.

  • You have ones of the best teaching videos in Youtube. I think you can write bigger the list, and write its explain. Cause no every body can hear english easy. To read is more easy some times..Thanks so much.

  • A Stride "Shopping List" is comprised of subtleties that are learned by listening and studying the performances of the originators of the stride style. Look for the following elements:

1.Drive or "groove"- the rhythmic pulse of the musical performance.

    2. Humor

    3.Dramatics

    4.Power

5."Swing"-the production of a musical sound that makes the listener physically move to the beat.

    6.Dynamics- as in classical music.

    7. Pedal use

    8. Improvisation
