Thanks for the comments, I would assume that most C 22 owners w/SK would know that the cable causes the hum. Another way to stop the sound is to simply unwind the cable about 1/2 turn and thus leave the keel full down. I don't use the locking bolt because it is basically useless for locking the keel. For example, if the boat went turtle, the bolt couldn't stop that 550lb keel from crashing into the hull.

loosen up your winch handle another turn or two and that moaning will stop. Mine does the same thing it drives me nuts. leaving it a little loose wont hurt a thing just stops all that noise!

@Rescue516 -Thanks for your suggestion. I'm fairly aware of this issue even before earlier suggestions of the same. At the time, the handle may have been a tad tight -probably because one of the dogs kicked over the handle when they were climbing around. At any rate that vid. was taken 2 years ago.

I envy your yauht, I love your dogs I also have 4 dogs a kolley, a haskey, a terre neuve and a Belgian woolf. You have to sail in the Greek islands for a memorable expierience.

Hi Maria,
Would enjoy sailing the Greek Islands. I understand the scenery is wonderful.
Someday hopefully, we will stop dreaming about it and enjoy the experience.

Our biggest wear problem is the waves at the dock. I can't leave the keel down all the time. Depth there has been ~5.5'> 3.5'depending on the season. If I leave it up the cable & turning ball will wear from the rocking. So I vary it. I'm experimenting with a shim that I attach to prevent the keel from wagging. I drill a hole in a fairly hard rubber ball of 2" diam. & put it on the cable between the turning ball and the keel. It wedges into the slot just below the turning ball. Lasts about 1 yr.

Now that was a bit of a problem here also. It used to have the clunk. I ended up making sure that the keel pivot pin & the hole were not worn. That can lead to the keel actually falling off. I also added some shims on either side in front of and around the front pivot so that the keel would not wobble. The whole keel is now encased in epoxy resin to prevent rust. The bottom part that scrapes is extra thick. I mixed west-system resin with fine wood sawdust to thicken it.
