Survivors of Stalingrad - Episode 1 of 3
In the closing months of 1942, only a few yards of bitterly contested ground stood between Hitler and the prize which he valued above all others - Stalingrad, the city on the Volga which carried the name of his greatest enemy. The terrible ferocity of the fighting in the ruined city plumbed the depths of human suffering the iron grip of a Russian winter. After the battle the wretched survivors of a beaten German army emerged from their hiding places and surrendered to the Red army. They had once been 350,000 strong but only 90,000 of these frost bitten, starving scarecrows remained to make the painful forced march into Russian captivity.

The series tells the experiences of men who fought in the battle which was the turning point of World War Two, including rare images and archive footage. The series examines the harsh conditions the battle was fought under and what became of the German troops after their surrender

  • Curious how at 7:50 Kubelwagen was translated to "Jeep" :)

  • It must also be stated that in the two days Paulus waited to trap the Russian armies before Stalingrad, his sixth army was defending it's left flank from a ferocious Soviet counter attack. This played a major part in the delay also.

  • Im american and ill admit our war docs are shit, and foreign made ones are much better.

  • @RebelSonBand Generally speaking the East was the harder theater of operations, my point is that it is a common misconception that the western European theater was a "gentleman's war" as you put it. There are points in time when the difference between the fronts was minimal re bitterness of fighting taking prisoners. On D-Day for example the allies issued specific instructions to take 'NO PRISONERS' and even after D-DAY Waffen SS soldiers where shot out of hand, surrendering or not.

  • @tris76UK But still, prisoners was taken on the western front.Red cross marks was generally respected..There was very little burning of villages because of partizan attacks..The Germans was astonished by the ammount of shells espically the US could use,on relative"small"targets..It sounds like you think fighting in the west was harder but its not true----the Eastern front was, without a doubt, much more"humane"war, much more old school gentleman battle,if there ever was such a thing..

  • @patsyd80 If you actually researched the subject you'd be aware that in Normandy the British faced 10 divisions, of which 6 where Waffen SS - Germany's best fighting men, on a front of 60 miles (the same number of divisions on the eastern front would typically cover 200-400 miles of front unless on operation).

Veterans of the Eastern front arriving at Normandy where often deeply shocked by the ferocity of the fighting, especially the quantity of artillery and use of fighter bombers

  • Stalingrad a loss for Christianity a win for the jews.

  • 0:54 are those bullet holes in that young German's helmet? if so, wow
