November 22, 2009 Angono Higantes Festival

Higantes means Giant but here in Angono, Rizal these are paper mâché giants measuring 10-12 feet in height and 4-5 feet in diameter.

According to folklores, when Angono was still a Spanish Hacienda, the owners forbidden the community to assemble any celebrations. They are only allowed to celebrate the town fiesta in honor of its patron saint, San Clemente. Before, only two or three higantes were made, representing a "mag-anak" (father, mother and son/daughter).

Well. I think this year was different

Since, this Higantes evolve into an art form. More than 50 plus higantes parades around the town proper. (from miniature higantes measuring 4-5 feet in height, well-known companies to hi-profile celebrities / politicians such as Obama, Manny Pacquiao etc)

Some of the higantes still used the traditional Bamboo strips or yantok, while the modern higantes used aluminum as the skeleton frame for the body.

As of now, this colorful festivity of Angono attracts local and even foreign tourist!

WATCH OUT! Higantes Festival coming soon on DVD!

Viva San Clemente!
