These are nasty rounds but "one special round" even TOPS the APM2 and I will not divulge that one but I can stop it even beyond the best LEVEL IV plates out there...I call that LEVEL V.

Wonder what the hotter-loaded 7.62x54 would do, like the 203-grain commercial stuff? Not that I think the enemy's likely to have it - seems likely they'd be shooting old milsurp stuff, loaded at 147 grains.

@CaptainMurphyDUCK I'm just glad to see someone testing, thanks, and good luck to your buddy.

@CaptainMurphyDUCK i don't know what ceramic plates weigh lol!

The Surplus Steel core ammo was made to go through multiple soft tissue targets, say like a 5, or 6 men in formation. Its crazy when you think about it. The Russians weren't fucking around back then. Also, I would not hide behind a cinder block wall, maybe a engine block you'd be lucky. lol. I'm glad you guys are testing these against the plates, cause it makes me reassured. The Taliban use those fucking rounds for SVT, and from the Russian invasion still. Saw one using an 8mm Mauser.

@Marine052191 We had plans to test with an 8mm Mauser but were not able to scrounge one up for the testing day. Maybe sometime soon we will get a chance to test with the same plate with one. We recently came across a good place to get US (and NATO) Issue surplus armor plates and vests that we will be testing. One of our DUCKs keeps getting orders to go back over to the sandbox so we wanted to make sure he had the best plates possible. Hence all of the testing we did.

Although better penetration than a lead core round, this ammo is NOT true armour piercing. It is a soft steel. A true driving steel core is composed of tungsten and other elements to produce the effect you gentlemen are looking for. This ammo you are shooting however is still VERY deadly.
Peace brothers.

@trangerstx You are correct. The rounds used were mild steel cores for the 7.62x54R. The M855 rounds used were Tungsten core as evidenced by the amount of damage caused by them, which exceeded what the 54R did. Other than just pure energy imparted the steel core rounds had no difference in damage than soft points.

is that supposed to be vehicle plating?
canisdormit 1 year ago
@canisdormit No, it is wearable armor. The weight on it is comparable to the ceramic ESAPI plates.
