@whatthehell81 A bright objest in any camera blinds the camera to anything else in shot. If they set the camera for a low enough F-Stop to capture the stars, the Earth would appear to be a dazzling white object (which would ruin the picture). As the F-Stop is increased, the less light is let into the camera. This renders the Earth visible in all it's glory, but kills all light from the relatively dim stars.

I think this would be due to the fact that light generated from the sun hits the Earth and then bounces off the atmosphere surface of our planet which in turn generates a fog of light from our perspective, which in turn renders what you can see in space behind it barely to completely invisible (depending on the object).
This being said, if the space station was on the dark side of the Earth, you would see the stars in the far distance.
