George Bailey tries to borrow the missing $8,000 from Potter and gets smacked down, hard.
I looked it up and $8000 in 1945 is about $90,000 in today's dollars, so Uncle Billy really screwed the pooch.

  • Is Drew Barrymore related to Lionel Barrymore?

  • @Calsummersishere

    She's his grand-niece

  • Bryan10983,

I can't express how grateful I am that you've posted this particular scene on YouTube. I think its the Greatest of All Cinema! Potter is playing Cat and Mouse with George, and all, as you say, from a WHEELCHAIR!!!!

    Grazie, Kman.

  • Glad you liked it! Last October my car died and I tried to get a loan from the bank to get a new one. But, because I was unemployed at the time, they laughed at me. Really, the loan officer laughed at me in her office! As I walked out of the bank I thought, "Now I know how George Bailey felt," and went home and posted this clip.

  • Potter is the Greatest of them all. A true Hero and Role model for Future Generations. Children should be made to study him in school.

  • He's really an inspiring figure. He's the richest and most powerful man in town and make fools of other younger, more able-bodied people all while confined to a wheelchair. There's a lot he can teach us.

  • At the end of this film I still think Uncle Billy should have gotten a severe ass-kicking.

  • I hear a remake of this glorious film is in the works. Starring as Potter in his first motion picture will be Dick Cheney!! He won't have to even act!!!Being a rich old prick comes so natural!!!!!!

  • That means that one dollar in 1945 is about $11.25 today.

  • Mr. Potter may be the greatest villain of all time. Hannibal Lecter, Darth Vader, the Joker, Norman Bates... none of them can manage to compare to this twisted old man.

  • @Adamguy2003 : That is a great point, and Potter even realizes it with his surprised remark "YOU lost?" which, consistent with his character makes him hate Bailey even more.

  • "You're worth more dead than alive."

None of Mr. Potter's lines could have been any more vile. Sure, they can be vile, but that line is absolutely the most vile for making George consider committing suicide.

  • Potter remains one of the greatest, most vicious villains in movie history. His greed and lust for power are apparent even in little, subtle things (i.e. in his office, the visitors' chairs are noticeably shorter than Potter's chair, giving off the impression of him lording over anyone who comes to visit him). In contrast, consider George's selflessness even in his current desperate state, saying he was the one who misplaced the money to keep Uncle Benny from getting into trouble for it.

  • HENRY: You're worth more dead than alive. GEORGE: I... I don't rightly follow you Mr. Potter. HENRY: I'm saying, George, that if you jumped off a bridge sometime tonight, that wretched family of yours could take the life insurance and I would finally be able to buy out the Building & Loan and turn Bedford Falls into the kinky hive of wanton hedonism I've always dreamed of. Children these days.

  • @kmatson07 I disagree. potter may have money and power but all that stuff does is corrupt people. a man can either have friends or he can have money. potter and bailey chose differently and look where they ended up. bailey ended up having his ass saved by his closest friends. but let's say potter was in that spot. who would save him? nobody would because he's a jerk to everyone. he thought of everyone as a pay check. money so they say is the root of all evil today.

  • @Calsummersishere how else could she have made it

  • Illuminati hand signal at 1:25

  • @WintersWar: Well, he was being to his dad first, and if his dad didn't have to deal with Mr. Potter, he would probably still be alive at this time in the movie.
