Mansion House Fire, Alton, IL.

Historic Mansion house, in Alton, IL. Built in 1834, served as a hotel, hospital, and boarding house through out its life. Was more recently converted into a 4 unit apartment building. On 1-14-10, myself, and my wife whom are neighbors to the structure, heard the sirens, and caught this video, along with lots of pictures. A building with tons of history, some say Lincoln slept here. What is heard is Fire Dept. truck horns (signaling EVACUATE), and sirens. Also heard on the radio, Evacuate, and Captains account for your crews. 6 Firefighters made it out safe. Within a minute (not seen on video) the fourth floor collapesed into the third. The building was balloon contruction, and the fire was thought to have started in the basement, and chased the walls to the fourth floor (attic). Special thanks to Alton Fire Dept, for thier excellent effort, that saved my home, and the neighboring structures.

You guys were right in thinking that the horn blast were to get the crews out. 3 horn blasts means evacuate as radios aren't always reliable. Also the reason why they weren't immidiately pouring water on the fire (I believe someone made a comment at about :57 ) was because you never put water on a fire from the outside while you still have people on the inside as it will literally push the fire on top of them.

So glad that only the one historic structure was destroyed. Entire district is historic, but knowing everyone was saved, is great news. On a personal note, as being my brother in law, I'm glad that I can hear you comforting my sister in the background, though you were on medical bed rest for a detached retina!!!!!
